‘Tequila’ is an alcoholic beverage with a long history that roots from Mexico. Known as the national drink of Mexicans, it is made widely popular today. The taste of tequila varies depending on the aging process, production method, and the type of sugar used. Tequila can be categorized into five types as follows!
Blanco or Silver Tequila: Unaged tequila that is bottled shortly after distillation, making it clear in color. It has a strong herbal flavor from agave, making it suitable for cocktails.
Gold Tequila: Made from pure agave and colored with caramel
Reposado Tequila: Aged in oak barrels or tanks for approximately two months, and scented with a light vanilla and caramel aroma, resulting in a more complex and easier-to-drink tequila.
Añejo Tequila: Similar to Reposado, Añejo Tequila is aged in oak barrels or tanks but for a longer period of typically at least one year. Añejo Tequila is often aged in larger barrels (around 600 liters), leading to a more complex flavor with a pronounced oak aroma, making it a great option for whiskey enthusiasts.
Extra Añejo Tequila: Aged for at least three years in oak barrels, giving it a rich and robust flavor with a strong oak aroma. This type of tequila is typically more expensive due to its long aging process.
One of the charms of tequila is its versatility in drinking methods. Unlike other alcoholic beverages that are typically consumed straight, there are various ways to enjoy tequila:
Consuming straight tequila shots
Tequila shots followed by a sip of orange juice
Shooters: the most popular method which involves licking salt from the rim of the glass, drinking the tequila, and then biting into a fresh slice of lime.
Slammers: Mixing tequila with a carbonated drink such as Sprite or 7-Up in a shot glass, sometimes with a pinch of salt. Slam the shot glass on the table to fizz it up before drinking immediately.
It can also be mixed into cocktails with fruit juices or other beverages to create various drinks containing different degrees of tequila such as Cantarito, Margarita, Paloma, or Tequila Sunrise.
